The article “Working as a freelance journalist right now is hard but not impossible. Here’s some advice” by Meena Thiruvengadam is intriguing. I’ve always viewed freelance work as unstable. However, after reading this article, I think freelance work can be stable because it allows freelancers to have multiple clients. Additionally, freelance work, such as writing, can be done from home, which is convenient.
This article talks about how freelance work has been impacted by the coronavirus. Many people around the world were laid off or foroughed in response to the virus, but freelance workers don’t have to worry about a boss firing them. Freelance workers have multiple clients, and the likelihood of every client dropping them is very slim, so this brings security to freelancers. I think this article was inspiring. At the end of the article, Thiruvengadam listed ways people can get involved with freelancing. I think there are many people during the quarantine that would be interested in The other article I read titled “The constant shifts of the coronavirus pandemic may be making journalists more comfortable expressing uncertainty” by Kevin Lerner talks about how journalists have dealt with the coronavirus. The last article about freelance mentioned that many journalists lost jobs due to the coronavirus, but his article shows that journalists are not all-knowing. It quotes a Los Angeles Times article that says the facts in the article are subject to change. Many people look to journalists for facts, but during the coronavirus there is a great deal of information that is unknown. I think the fact that the Los Angeles Times was transparent about the potential for its information about the coronavirus to lose credibility in the future must have been a difficult statement to write, but I think by doing this they were acting with good morals. In this article, Lerner explains the difference between fact and truth. Before reading this, I thought fact and truth were the same. When explaining what truth this, Lerner said “It emerges as facts collect, and each new fact changes a society’s collective understanding of truth.” I think this clearly shows that truth can change as more information, or facts, are accumulated. This article also discusses how journalism operates each day. Lerner said “Journalists, however, have historically done a bad job of explaining to the public that each day’s news report is, by necessity, incomplete and provisional.” Through this quote, Lerner is saying that there is no possible way that journalists can cover all of the news of the day, and this explains why journalists can’t know all the information regarding the Coronavirus. At the end of this article, Lerner writes that he thinks more news organizations should do what the Los Angeles Times did when it comes to uncertainty. He said if “the press likewise acknowledges that today’s truth is not a finished story and audiences begin to demand that sort of transparency, then as trust builds between journalists and the public, a mutual understanding of the facts and, ultimately, the truth can emerge.”

This article was written to make a point, but it likely won’t get through to those who are conservative because it talks poorly of Trump in the first part of the essay. However, this article isn’t necessarily trying to get through to conservatives, but instead trying to make a comment on the current state of journalism. The main point of this article is that journalists should be doing more to expose Trump. The author says that if journalists did more to expose Trump’s flaws, then he likely wouldn’t be the President of the United States. Thus, this article alludes to the power of journalism. It shows that journalists are important in society, and that journalists should work to expose corruption. Unions are often depicted as negative organizations, but they can do a lot of good for workers. Unions are a means by which employees can stick up for themselves and advocate for their needs. The article talks about the importance of unions and states that journalists should form unions. If journalists formed unions, then they would be more equipt to fight for their needs, and they’d have more power to do so, since there is power in number. I think if journalists read this article, then they might be inspired to create a union and tell their fellow journalists to do the same.
This article advocates for the collaboration of news organizations, which is something most news organizations are against doing. The article supports working together because more people working together will help news organizations survive the pandemic, so I think this article is very important for news organizations to read. The article says working collaboratively can help news organizations with mitigating expenses, help them increase revenue, reach underserved communities, give them access to specialized resources, and will help them leave a larger impact. After reading this article, I was surprised that more news organizations don’t work together. I think this article made a very good point, and I think working collaboratively could help save news organizations from going under.
This article is very detailed, and it was written in order to explain anonymous sources to the reader. This article explains anonymous sources and how tips can be given to news organizations. Even though stories are not based on anonymous sources, anonymous sources can alert news stations of potential stories. There are various ways people can submit anonymous sources, such as by mail, email, phone, and securedrop, which is fully encrypted communication and accessed via the Tor browser. Other, more obscure methods, include ProtonMail and PGP. ProtonMail is an email service that fully encrypts the messages, and PGP can also encrypt emails. This anonymity is important because some sources’ careers or reputations could be negatively impacted if their identity is revealed.
I really like the way this article is written. The beginning starts with a narrative that explains what social distancing is like. By having a narrative in the beginning, it pulls the audience in and makes people want to keep reading. One aspect of this article that I found very interesting was the way people are tracking the spread of the coronavirus. In the past, the CDC has used interviews as the main method of tracking. However, people are starting to track the spread of the virus based on cell phone GPS tracking. This new technology is making it easier for the spread of the virus to be tracked, and I’m interested to see what new technology will be invented that helps track the spread of viruses.
